Environmental Conservation

The Town of Chatham and surrounding towns enjoy abundant environmental resources, including open spaces, forests, farms, streams, ponds and lakes.  Residents enjoy clean air, quiet, and relatively low light pollution – we can see the stars on a clear night from many places in the Town.  We want to protect these resources and allow people to use them in ways that suit their interests. In keeping with the concept of thinking globally and acting locally, the Chatham Democrats recognize the perils associated with climate change and encourage actions to save our planet. Specific to Chatham we support responsible development of renewable energy generation with solar, wind, and biofuels systems. We also support the development of reasonable alternatives for waste reduction, including reuse and recycling practices for plastics, food waste composting and reuse of still viable items in the solid waste stream. We believe that preserving the safety of the water supply and minimizing/mitigating existing pollution is necessary to ensure a healthy environment and that the town government is responsible to work with other government agencies to monitor and preserve the safety of the environment for the health of all town residents.
