Town Board report June 15, 2023

Town Board passed three local laws giving property tax exemptions to emergency responders, disabled and low-income residents, and lower-income seniors.

The laws follow guidelines laid out in state legislation.

Principal action at the monthly meeting concerned the town’s recent paving of a short stretch on Hanley Road. For 45 minutes, supporters of the Chatham Dirt Road Coalition spoke against any paving of any roads currently topped with dirt or gravel.

Even though the newly paved section is only 0.5 mile long, opponents foresaw more pressure to pave roads that, in their opinion, are critical to the scenic nature of Chatham.

A few who spoke argued that dirt roads present safety hazards and damage cars.
