Highway Superintendent
While the office of Highway Superintendent is an elected position, the resignation of the previous highway superintendent allowed the Chatham Town Board to appoint Mr. Fetzer to the remainder of that term in September 2023. In keeping with NYS law, Fetzer’s appointed term will end on 12/31/2024, and he will stand for election as Highway Supervisor for the next four years in November.
Superintendent Fetzer will be on the Democratic ballot line in the 2024 general election. There is no opposition candidate, and he is also endorsed by the Republican Party.
Fetzer spoke to the assembled caucus, saying he had been employed by the Town of LaGrange Highway Department since his graduation from high school. Prior to his retirement from that department about 2½ years ago, he rose through the ranks, holding positions of laborer, driver, mechanic, supervisor, and foreman. A resident of Chatham, he had established a landscaping business prior to applying for the Highway Superintendent position in 2023.
Fetzer noted that he values the dirt roads of the town, and said he is committed to addressing residents’ concerns about all of the town roads. In a follow up interview,he said there are 97 miles of road in the town, and 47 of those are unpaved / dirt roads. He said he’s committed to preserve and protect all of the town roads so that they are safe for everyone who uses them.
